Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba Movie Review: The sequel to the 2021 film Haseen Dillruba successfully addresses the flaws of its predecessor. It’s a dark, atmospheric thriller filled with characters who use love, betrayal, and deceit to achieve their questionable goals. It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a Hindi film that dives headfirst into the murky waters of adult, morally ambiguous romance.

In Phir Aayi Haseen Dillruba (with an added ‘s’ for extra impact), we quickly learn that our runaway lovers, Rani (Taapsee Pannu) and Rishu (Vikrant Massey), are far from safe. Despite hiding out in Agra, their relentless pursuer, a determined cop (Aditya Srivastava), remains on their trail.

This time, they face an even more formidable adversary: the sharp and cunning investigator Mrityunjay (Jimmy Sheirgill), who calls himself a ‘kadhphodwa’ (woodpecker) in a memorable scene, complete with pecking gestures. He’s determined to expose the couple’s involvement in the death of someone dear to him.

New additions to the cast add depth to the story. Abhimanyu (Sunny Kaushal), a mild-mannered local compounder, harbors a secret crush on Rani, but he also possesses a surprising knowledge of the Yamuna River’s treacherous waters and its lurking crocodiles. Another notable character is a cunning woman (Bhumika Dube) who uses her disability as a weapon to achieve her goals, even if her target shows no interest in her. After her standout role in the feminist romp Cheepatakadumka, she makes a similarly strong impact here.

Credit goes to writer Kanika Dhillon for crafting characters with a sense of empathy, making us root for them despite their flaws. These characters may go to extreme lengths, even committing murder, to achieve their desires, but they’re not inherently evil. Their actions are driven by love, much like the lurid stories found in pulp fiction novels with titles like ‘Khooni Ishq’ and ‘Pyaar Ka Darinda.’ References to these novels, as in the previous film, add just the right touch of sleaze to the story.

However, the film isn’t without its flaws. Some scenes, like the one behind the Taj Mahal or the boat ride on the polluted Yamuna, feel overused and clichéd. Certain deaths serve as obvious red herrings, and some dialogues are so on-the-nose that they induce cringes. Additionally, a scene where a group of cops arrives at a suspect’s door only to wait patiently is downright frustrating.

Yet, these contrivances are part and parcel of the pulpy, trashy fiction that Hindi writers of the 60s and 70s excelled at. Despite the expected “this-body-can’t-possibly-be-his” scenes, the film manages to throw in enough surprises to keep viewers engaged.

The trio of Taapsee Pannu as the scheming Rani, Vikrant Massey as the steadfast lover Rishu, and Sunny Kaushal as the devoted Abhimanyu all deliver strong performances, with Kaushal stealing every scene he’s in. Shergill is also excellent, though his character’s inconsistency in pronouncing “Rishu” as “Rissu” is a minor annoyance.

I’ve always had a soft spot for stories where right and wrong aren’t clearly defined, and this film pushes the right buttons, blending lust and danger seamlessly. More of this, please!
